golden week, because of all the holidays a row. school and business close, and it's a popular time for vacations. may 5th is
children's day, and families fly these koi nobori or carp flags. cities also fly them in larger numbers, like the photo above.

I remember golden week and the carp flags in Kyoto... I was there seven years ago but feels like it was only yesterday. I would go back there in a heartbeat. In Poland, where I'm originally from, children's day is June the 1st. Kids get candies and small gifts, but there's nothing like the carp flags to celebrate that day.
