happy new year

new books for winter over at my etsy shop. the one on the left has amazing felt hats-i'm planning to keep it around for inspiration for years to come. the one on the right is scandinavian inspired felting--very cute! things scandinavian are trendy right now in japan, which makes sense, since a lot of northern european customs and aesthetics tie in rather well with zakka.
my gocco printed linen coasters also in the shop-bright red acorns seem good for winter, or maybe that's just squirrel logic!
my new wool muji slippers in orange. my toasty toes love them. (i couldn't resist and got the herringbone ones too! shhh. they're for guests;-)
here's the mouse from my last post-in honor of 2008, year of the 'nezumi,' or mouse, in japan.

new books sneak peek

i'm rushing around getting ready for a vacation trip that starts this weekend. i'll be shipping all received orders on friday (japan time) and then after i get back on june 14th.
here's a sneak peak of some of the new titles i will be carrying in my etsy shop, including these from the lovely handmade zakka series.
there are also a few new felt books that have been published recently:this is the most amazing needle-felted food i have ever seen. seriously. so detailed and perfect!
this is another new book about sewing with felt. usually i don't carry many sewing with felt books, but this one is especially lovely and has a great modern feel to the projects and designs.

i haven't posted them yet, but plan to in the next few days.
if you want one right away, you can email me directly.

my gocco treasury is on etsy's front page!

oh my god, how exciting! i feel positively giddy. AND...people are buying the items, which is good for the awesome gocco artists, but means my treasury is shrinking! here's the original treasury below.

etsy is a drug, a wonderful drug

this is the best thing ever. from etsyian das kaninchen (which means the bunny, in german), the bueys bunny! i love it so much i can hardly stand it. for those of you without a dorky art major past like me, joseph bueys was an early conceptual/installation artist. he constructed a whole imagined narrative history for himself about crashing his airplane and being saved by being wrapped in fat and felt. which lead to his use of heavy felt in many of his works. so, he's sort of a felt hero, to me at least.
das kaninchen has made this bueys bunny in a clever comment on buey's performance piece 'how to explain pictures to a head hare,' and turns the inherent elitism of his ideas upside down as a crafted toy that can be drooled on.
she is one smart cookie. she also has fibonacci bunnies. sweet.

kits debut

in my etsy shop...how to make felt kits. yay!
also, if you haven't noticed, look a little to the right and behold the brilliance that is etsy mini: a little bit of java script that automatically updates to show the most recent listings in your etsy shop. man, those etsy folks are the coolest!

more felt books

i've just added a few more felt books to my etsy shop.

1. ISBN 4-309-28073-0
small articles made of wool felt for baby

includes projects for handpuppets, a hat, rattle, bags, shoes, cushions, accessories, and more cute things. 23 projects total.
all written instructions are in japanese, but there are clear diagrams and step by step photos for the different kinds of projects, and lovely images of the finished works.
both needle and wet felting projects are included, some projects combine both techniques.
this is a good book for someone who already understands the basics of felting. if you know how to felt around a flat resist, the wet felting projects should be no problem.

2. ISBN #4-277-43072-4
simple zakka and bag of felt wool

the book includes many wet-felted projects like bags, coasters, and lots of decorative and functional items to use at home. the coasters include the application of needle-felting patterns. the unique combination of techniques in this book is the combination of felting and crochet, both with yarn and with raffia.
there are 23 different projects. althought the text is entirely in japanese, there are clear instruction diagrams and pictures, both for wet- and needle- felted projects and crochet additions.
